Khruangbin Live: A Masterpiece of Music, Light, and Theatrical Art

Khruangbin has brought artistry back to live music. The audience was completely captivated at Margaret Court Arena on Tuesday, 25 February. Hypnotised for the full 90-minute duration, there were no phones in sight; A rare occurrence in a sold out arena. This performance marked the start of their Australian tour, Khruangbin À La Sala.

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Khruangbin consists of bassist Laura Lee, lead guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald Johnson Jr. The psych-funk trio, recently nominated for a 2024 Grammy in the Best New Artist category, is renowned for blending global influences—Thai rock, Iranian pop, and dub—seamlessly with American soul, rock, and psychedelia.

This performance was a full theatrical experience for concertgoers, taking the audience on a journey without a single set change. Through the masterful use of lighting, smoke, and projections, the atmosphere was transformed.

The intermission was a work of art. Staged as a thunderstorm that seamlessly carried the audience further into the night’s journey. The entire performance unfolded like a visual and auditory exploration of seasons, skies, and colours.

More than a live rendition of their songs, this concert was an immersive experience. The sheer talent of the musicians, their strong stage presence and the simple and well curated stage design. Every element was executed with precision and intention.
